TOOTH GEMS with liv
Tooth gems are here!
A quick and safe procedure, you can adorn your smile however you’d like. All materials used are dental-grade, non-toxic, lead-free and won’t damage your teeth (with proper care). Gems are bonded using the same materials dentists use to apply braces and are meant to be semi-permanent—they can be easily removed by your dentist or hygienist.
Liv carries a number of clear and colored Swarovski and Preciosa Maxima gems, opal cabochons and various shaped gems and opals, too. They have a limited stock of 18-24k gold gems on hand but invite you to pre-order any gold/diamond gems. To view current stock of Goldies, click here. To pre-order Goldies, click here and scroll to the bottom of the page. Once you’ve purchased your pre-order, you must schedule an appointment at least 21 days after sending the request to secure your deposit and ensure the gem is shipped in time.
Custom tooth gem appointments require a $50 non-refundable deposit at the time of booking. The deposit goes toward the cost of the procedure (unless there is a last-minute cancellation, reschedule or no-show).
Once booked, you will receive a form to complete via email; please make sure to include roughly the total number of gems you’re looking for and any special requests (other than gold; gold requests require 3+ weeks advance notice) so Potion can adjust your appointment time as needed and ensure we have your requested gems in stock.
FAQS
What is the process like?
First, you’ll decide on gems and placement (feel free to bring inspiration or let Liv help you choose!). Then, you’ll clean the tooth area with a single use tooth wipe. Depending on the placement, you may need a cheek retractor placed to ensure the tooth remains dry; sometimes, just a cotton roll will suffice. When the tooth is dry, Liv will apply multiple steps of dental grade solutions to the gem area and place the gem. Before bonding the gem, Liv will double check that it is placed how you like. Liv will then bond the gem to your tooth. The procedure is non-invasive, safe, non-toxic and painless.
How long will it last?
The answer depends entirely on the person! Your dental hygiene, the foods you eat, your care for the gem and the acidity of your saliva all play a role in your gem’s longevity. That said, they are meant to be semi-permanent, lasting 6 months to even 3 years. Larger gems, gems with intricate shapes and gold gems (heavier gems) may not last as long as simple gems. If your gem falls off within 3 weeks of application, please reach out to Liv so they can replace the gem for you free of charge.
What if I accidentally swallow it?
No worries! Liv only purchases non-toxic, lead-free tooth adornments. It will pass the same as any ingestible.
What if I want it removed?
The gem itself can occasionally be removed at home with floss, but not always. The gem and composite that bonds the gem to your tooth can be easily removed at your dentist’s office; Liv recommends leaving gem removal to your dentist/hygienist as it is a quick and simple process for them.
Can I still get my teeth cleaned?
Yes, and Liv highly recommends it! Stay up to date on your tooth cleanings; they won’t impact a thing. Gem bonding creates a mechanical seal around the gem—this means bacteria will not get trapped under the gem.
What if I whiten my teeth?
If you have recently undergone tooth whitening, the area under the gem you’d like placed won’t be affected. However, Liv recommends against any tooth whitening while you have your gem placed; the gem/bonding will block the effects of whitening and leave a darker shade underneath!
Can I get a gem if I have veneers/dentures/invisalign/a retainer?
Great question! The composite material will only bond to natural tooth tissue, so please keep that in mind. If you use invisalign or other types of similar retainers, the gem will not fit. If you have a wire retainer, some gem placements are possible! Please bring your retainer in in that case so Liv can choose a gem placement that the retainer won’t interfere with.
Will I be able to feel the gem?
Yes! For the first few days, the gem will be noticeable with your tongue. After a few days, you’ll be used to the sensation and they will hardly be noticeable.
I have leftover material from a previous tooth gem where I want a new one placed. Can I still get a gem there?
No; the material must be removed completely for successful bonding. Please ask your dentist/hygienist to remove it if you want another gem in the same area.
How do I care for my gem?
Do not touch or play with the gem, especially in the first 24 hours
Do not eat or drink anything for the first 2 hours after placement
Avoid alcohol, acidic beverages/foods, hard foods and candies for the first 12 hours after placement
Wait 12-18 hours before brushing directly over the gem
Wait 48 hours to brush over the gem if using an electric toothbrush (manual toothbrushes are fine!)
